I use 5W-30 in winter and 10W-30 in Summer since it doesn't drop anywhere near the lower temperatures that 5W-30 is made for in the summer months.

damn, a lot of different opinions on this. i know i burned through a quart of 5w30 in about 1000 miles, so i dont think im going with that.

would it hurt to do 10 40 though?

    edit: i have a 06 wrx btw

Why don't you just use what it calls for...just a thought....no need to stress out about it...IMO

Nickolas, how many miles on the car?
How long have you had the car?
What mods does the car have?

Sounds like you have a problem with the engine, not the oil you're using.

    Read this,then decide...........
    ??What oil should I use??

If your in a colder climate I would not be running 10w-40. And the car does not just call for 5w-30,its just whats recommended for best gas mileage.

i've been running 5W-30 synthetic ever since i bought my 2002 WRX with 13,000 miles on it. initially i used Castrol synthetic when i used to work at a BMW dealer since it's what they had but at about 45,000 miles i switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic and now with 104,500 miles on my car i am happy to report i have never had any oil related issues.

also where i live in southeast PA we get every season and we get winter days in the single and zero digits along with summer days in the high 90's and low 100's with humidity and i've never switched oil weight.
