    Rod knock? Video included.

Just started my car this morning, went to back it out the driveway and on revving it up noticed a tick. Here's the video:

YouTube - 2002 WRX Rod knock?

The knock is very faint, but has the sound of rod knock. I looked at some other videos, especially this one:

YouTube - MY 2002 WRX - Rod knock

They have the same sound but mine is much quieter and is not always audible. I thought I'd get some more opinions.

Reply to the video here please, I'd like to separate WRX forum users from the typical Youtube mechanics. Any input is welcome, even if it's bad news.

That's what it's sounding like to me, the early onset of knock. With as many miles as you have on it, and it sounds like it's at stage 2, it's not really all too surprising.

I went through it twice. Blew 2 2.0's and then finally went 2.5.

Spending money to fix a broken car fun? Not really. Spending money to make your car faster or nicer, that's fun

But yeah, fixing a broken car is half the fun of the hobby.

Well, then think of this being an opportunity to make your car faster, if you rebuild it with better internals, it will be able to go faster more easily.

Well I guess you have to think of it like this. In my opinion its not fun fixing a broken car but if I hadnt messed up my 2.0 I wouldnt have known the wonderful torque of the 2.5! :-)

I mean it always leads to something better. That just my .02

The perfect excuse to put some sexy H-beams in there. If only I had that much money laying around.

I might just do a 2.5 like you did, since I was thinking of swapping a 6sp eventually anyway. Is it a hard swap? Expensive?

Might check your timing belt idler before you write it off.

Not really. But the least expensive & less work thing to do is to do the hybrid swap which everyone will recommend. I just swapped the whole 2.5 in.

Yeah I was going to check the tensioner before I did any major work on the bottom end, because there's that whirring noise. The whir has been there since I got the car, but I don't know boxer noises yet so I don't know if it's supposed to be there or not.

Looks like a lot of hassle for the hybrid, I'd rather spend a few more bucks and get the whole shebang. Where's the best place to find an ej25? Craigslist doesn't have any around here.

Yea it really isn't that much of a hassel. But I agree with you thats why I got the whole motor. Go to car-parts.com they always have parts for whatever car for a good price. Just don't go too cheap when looking for a motor cause you get what you pay for.
