okay, well on a more serious note... do you think this could be a possibility? Or what would you suggest is the problem?

What bugs me is...you mentioned the car only makes the noise while its in gear...once you throw it in neutral it quiets up...from what your are saying here it sounds to me like maybe a pinion bearing or something...

how much would that cost to replace?

Also it goes away too, after the car has driven for a little bit of time... could this still be a bearing?

I'll lay money that you will still be hearing the same sounds 60K from now unless you abuse it and rip a gear. You should do all the diff and trans bushings so it can sound like a school bus when it engine brakes like mine does.

Mine whines too. It's common on WRXs in 1-3rd... We can go for a drive one of these days and I can tell you if it sounds normal or not.

I'm not a mechanic, but the difference in sound between a decelerating transmission, and an issue is fairly distinct.

I was joking - they make it whine louder like a truck

All told it adds up though -

    Rear diff bushings: ~$40
OUtrigger bushings & subframe lock: ~$100
    Trans mount: ~$90
    Trans donuts: ~$40

I would expect maybe 3 hours of shop time - could take less or a lot more if the don't know the tricks to getting the rear diff bushings in (all the rest are easy DIY).

See thats the thing i know there is a whining sound from the tranny in 1-3 gear, but lately since it has been super cold, until my car warms up a bit, when i release the gas pedal in gear, there is like a whining or grinding noise. After a small decent drive, it stops though.

What I am trying to say is if all your maintenance is done, don't worry about it unless it breaks. My car always whined although it was less noticeable before big sticky summer tires and bushings, so I'm kind of surprised anyone thinks it is an issue. Mine is not bearing whine (I know just what that sounds like from having multiple old manuals).

The bushings are great mods BTW.

Seriously - we have lots of big hills and mine has been singing a similar sounding tune for many thousands of miles.

i will definately look into doing the bushing, but im not so sure whining noise is good. I know the distinct transmission whine, but lately it has been more of the whine mixed with a grind.
