just so i'm understanding correctly, when you say "It runs 1.5 bar of boost, but i dont think its been mapped," do you mean it has all of those mods but no tune or engine management?

Hi all, im lee, just registered as bought my first scooby.. however i have come across a few problems in last few weeks.
Firstly the car is a 01 reg bug eye wrx, 35k,(well thats on the clocks), but does have history and old mots to verfy millage.
The car is an inport as ive just found out.
Now to the problems, when i bought it, the engine idled really rough, like fromm 500rpm to 300, then up to 700, it was noticable it only does this every say 10 secs, not constantly., i took it to get a diagnostic and it came back with running lean on bank 1?? wot ever this means? anyway cleared it and its now come back on. The car smells of fuel smells, wen driving, and also when its stood still at lights, it smokes a bit, however it is cold weather season, and if i set off there is more smoke, looks bit bluey, not 100% sure tho on colour. it only does this everynow and then tho, sometimes dont smoke.. the mods to the car, as far as iknow are,
sti bottom end,
vf34 ballbearing turbo
bailey dump valve
full samco blue hose kit
CAI induction kit
Turbo inlet blue pipe
turbo back exhaust, no cats at all.
It runs 1.5 bar of boost, but i dont think its been mapped,
also has a different top mount intercooler, had like 2 extra breather pipes on it from std??? just wot i been told?
the car runs perfect when u give it some, no misses, no smoke, just all good, just had a idle issue, and smokey on tik over after driving.. Can anyone help me, im not sure weather to seel, as could be trouble, or persavier with it.. any idvice and ideas would be great, anyone experienced any of these probs. the turbo pipe doesnt seem to be a good fit either, hoping to change that this weekend, all pipes have been checked and we cant seem to find a leak, part from turbo pipe?
one more thing, could the de cats cause this to run lean, and bring light on? the car is a blue wrx, with sti wheels, with private reg h16 ddd, incase anyone knows the car, or seen it when was on ebay recently..

You might want to check to see if the car is even tuned...that's where I would start.

Go to Scoobynet since they will know UK-based garages. The error code you got was probably PO171. It indicates a lean condition and/or a leak in either the pressurized or the atmospheric part of the intake track, or a failure in the vacuum line that runs to the fuel pressure regulator.
The intake and/or the turbo itself, without a map, could cause the car to run lean and in any case it needs to be sorted anyway, so find some place local to take it and have them look at it.

im presuming it has no map, however i was not told it had, and i think the owner would of told me it did, if it did. and yer i was thinking it has all these mods and no setup to management, would be a bad condition for the car to be in anyway. On to my next question? if i removed the exhaust and airfilter, would this change the overall running of the car and clear the lean running of the car..? i just want it back to normal to be fair.. could this lean running be a cause of bad idling? cause it dont idle bad if i drive it steady, and i mean steady.
Without knowing what map is being run now, if any, it's difficult to determine what might be wrong. Usually a lean condition is seen under load more readily than it is seen at idle, for example, but I'm in another country and what I think won't do the car any good I'm afraid. Take it in and have a garage look at it; find a Subaru specialist in your area.
