Is it coming from the downpipe at the turbo or further down the pipe like under the car. I know my downpipe was rattling because it was not bolted to that mount near the O2 sensor, it was just sitting on the hook.

The last couple weeks i have been starting my engine and there was a rattlting sound every few seconds just for a seconds and then it would go away. If it is freezing outside it doesn't make the sound, and also after the engine warmed up the noise stopped. There was no performance loss, and the engine light never came on. Some info about the car is i bought the car with 110,000 miles on it, and the clicking was not there in the beginning. The clicking sound seems to be coming from the down pipe, im pretty sure, i have heard it could be the pistons or the water pump, but the sound comes from around the downpipe, not the front of the engine.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think farther down Because the rattling is louder under the car. After the car is warmed up it goes away...
could just be a loose heatshield. I'd get it up on ramps and try hitting each heatshield section to see if it rattles. Rust pretty much eats through the bolts holding them together and they start to rattle.
First thing I would do is make sure the downpipe is secured to its mounts. There should be two, one about half way down from the turbo and the other just past the O2 sensor.

In class now but when I get out I'm gonna check it out and let you know what I find out.
Whatever is rattling could stop when it heats up and expands.

i just checked the heat shields and the connection between the catback and the dp. they were both tight. What else could this be, another kind of problem with my dp? or something else in the same area?
does anyone have any other ideas to what the problem could be?
