Which synthetic motor oil is better?

Is there a significant difference in synthetic motor oils? or are they all roughly good. Ive been using Mobile1 for a real long time, but this oil change place has a promotion where they give a free car wash with every oil change, but they only have penzoil. Is Penzoil a good performance oil?

The best answer..... is to use synthetic, and change it regularly..... and more often if you drive it hard.

I'd also recommend staying with the SAME sythetic oil for the life of the car.

Is any particular "brand" of synthetic really going to nake a difference? I doubt it.

I use Mobil 1 as well..... I trust it/.... so do a lot of guys. 44k miles with a turbo upgrade, and it doesn't burn a drop.

Penzoil synthetic? Sure, why not......

Might be more useful to post a poll with all/most of the synthetic alternatives and have people vote for what they use without the potential flame fest, if it hasn't been done already.

I use Mobil 1, and continue to use it since it performed flawlessly for me in the cold, lonely, and painful depths of winter when I lived in the near arctic.

why do you say not to use 5w30? what do you recomend? It says it on the oil fill cap and in the manual its prefered. i was told from the dealer i bought it from thats what they put in it. i have a ticking/valve knock sound. i use the highest octane i can buy. do you think it is because of the 5w30 oil?

Im no mechanic but if you put thicker oil in it will quit down the tapping.

I use mobile 1 10w 30. I am kind of happy with it. I go to walmart and buy the 5 quart jug for 21.oo instead of like 7.oo per quart at autozone.

I always try and find better oil, I have used royal purple, and put royal P in the tranny and did not really care for how she shifted so I stopped.

5w30 Mobil 1 is what's burning like crazy and ending in spun bearing stories.

I personally won't use Mobil one via other people's misfortunes and Royal Purple due to my own.

I prefer M1 0W-40, no spun bearings on any of my Subaru's and they all see some pretty bad abuse at the track. Some people say M1 is the worst thing since muddy water for your bearings but I haven't ran into any troubles yet.

I've used Mobil 1 for the entire life of my car. I just hit 100K on my '02 WRX. She doesn't burn a drop of oil, nor does she leak any. I had the timing belt done at Cobb in Plano, TX and they were amazed at how clean everything was under the hood for 100K.
By the way, I used nothing but 5w-30 and I've lived in every climate in the US. All the way from Colorado, Florida, Mississippi, to now West Texas. Long story short, I don't believe all the Mobil 1 horror stories.

A poll would not answer the question. It would only show what oils are popular.

To answer the question data are needed from used oil analysis. I and several others have posted data in the past. If there are more data to be posted now, it'd be great to see them. Otherwise I think the thread won't be useful.

Any Group IV synthetic is going to be better than any Group III synthetic.

And if you don't believe the Mobil 1 horror stories just Google search " Mobil 1 5w-30 shearing problems" They may have changed there forumla but there was a problem with Mobil 1's 5w30's additive package not allowing it to get to a 30 weight viscosity. It was more like a 5w-20.

I recently switched off of M1 5w-30. Just too noisy for me but I never had a problem.
