It generally has to do with the retards who:
1. Have no idea how to properly maintain a vehicle.
2. Mod their car without knowing what they are doing or researching first.
3. Flat out abusing the car.

I just bought a 02 subaru wrx 5spd. about a month ago and ever since, i've been seeing a good bit of stuff about engine and transmission problems and failures, and then theres people that say they last forever. It really confuses me. I've read about engines that start knocking with 70 to 100k miles on them. Why is this? The car i bought has about 112k miles on it and it had another short block put in it about 6 months ago due to a bottom end knock.
Im guessing a turbo car has more stress put on the motor when in boost, which over time if its abused alot, can cause motor problems like that? I know the ford rangers 4 cyl engine could be abused all day and night and still last forever. Another thing i just thought of... since wrx's can use oil, i guess its possble that the people with the engine replacements could be due to them not checking the oil level and letting it get too low? Im just trying to understand why i've heard about several subaru motors going bad, but from what i've seen, there hasn't been many problems with engine failures with other performance type cars.
+1^ about the ford rangers..we got one of those suckers as a trade in the other day at work as a cash for clunkers car....after i drained the oil and poured in the liquid glass lol I pulled that thing out and it ran for damn near 25 minutes before she seized....I can say this about Subarus however, maintained properly and not abused they can last you hundreds of thousands of miles...I have around 204k on my Legacy...
