First look under the hood-discovered a weird thing

Today, when I started cleaning out the engine bay, I've discovered a weird thing. The air snorkel was CUT on the bottom side (has it "belly" open) and than ducted with duct tape...
I guess thatís something previous owner did, but why? What could that mean?

My guess is the car was previously hit in the front.

No, no, this is a clean cut with a knife or a Dremel tool. The car wasnt hit for sure.
    Thanks,

Maybe the previous owner just did something stupid. In the end,who cares. If it is causing a problem replace it,if not leave it be.

maybe the previous owner installed one of those new-fangled Vornados or electric super-chargers.

Almost looks like he was trying to clear lights or something..In any event its nothing too bad, just an intake snorkle, most people take them off anyways, sure you could score one for the cost of shipping.

Why to take it out? Supposedly frees the airflow?
    Thanks,

no. People remove them when the do the "snorkus delete" to get more sound and never put them back. Others dont like the way it looks. Some remove it when the install an aftermarket intake. I personally like mine therefore it has remained in place.

Obviously the previous owner was using it for smuggling. Did you buy it at a police auction?

It's the original color. Garnet Red Pearl from 2007 production year. Just thought it looked unique (for a WRX) on the dealer lot.

dude... last night just before i fell asleep i was thinking about your post... and you know what that cutout could be for...?!
I think the prev owner did some drag racing... and he removed the headlight for more air flow... (and cut that out obviously)

    WOW.... makes sense....

Mine has something similar to this... but is a little hole on the opposite side of his..... looks stock, but never noticed it before (as it's real close to the airbox). Can someone go look at theirs and let me know ?
