It's a tight fit to get tools/hands in there but you should be able to get the bolts loosened & out w/o having to lift the motor up. 1. Take the bolts out
    2. Take the valve cover off
    3. Toss out the old gasket
    4. Clean head mating surface
    5. Install new gasket into clean valve cover
    6. Put cover back into place
    7. Replace bolt gaskets
    8. Tighten to spec
    9. Enjoy!

You're very welcome. It's a pretty easy job. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two. No glue or RTV needed. You should be able to leave the plugs in as well.

Thanks once again .. yeh i have had a look and it looks like there is enough room to swing my tools and get the cover in and out all sorted

and if i can get away with leaving the plugs in that bonus

i noticed it's a bit of a design fault because directly under the value cover in the heat of the exhaust baking the gasket

oh well an hour or 2 is great i'll have it done in an afternoon after work

    thanks

If that equates to about 4 ft/lbs, then yes.

Tightening torque for rocker cover bolts for 2.0L 2001+ turbo motor is 5 Nm or 0.5 kgm, and this seems to translate to 3.6 ftlbs. Factory manual ME(D0HC TURBO)-61.

You can probably do it by feel. 4 ft/lbs isn't much at all. Good luck.

The only time i've disconnected my battery terminal was when I took my engine out. You're not working on anything electrical but it's entirely up to you.

I know this is old but

can this be done without lifting the motor on an 02 WRX 2.0?
Bought this car 10-18-01 and never looked back...

Ya I would like to know as well. I will be checking this weekend to see if there is enough clearance to get some hand tools in there and pull the valve cover out. If there is I'm going to order the gasket set and I'll post some pics once it gets that far. It sounds like what everyone is saying in this thread is referring to the same motor or close to the same set up as an 02 WRX. We shall see

Yes, you do not have to remove the motor for this job. It is not easy to do because of the lack of space to work, but it is perfectly feasible. It's just not much fun.
