    replace the sensor.

disconnect negative battery terminal to clear the code, if you do not replace the bad sensor, the code and ENG light will return.

I am dealing with a similar issue, but the mechanic tells me this thing has FOUR O2 sensors?

Is there a way to test individual sensors in order to figure out which one is bad? These things are not cheap!

Maybe he is thinking of the EZ30 or EZ36 found in the Tribecas, and some H6 outbacks/Legacies fore they have 4 02 sensors...
