Engine ticking sound after coolant pipe split!!!

Got a 95 wrx import, went to a cruise the other day and stopped to notice coolant leaking from the bottom rad hose...split.

I patched it up and topped up as I had to get home...as i started to drive the temp gauge went up and up. Im guessing the coolant was still coming out and nothing in the engine.

Eventually saw steam and got towed home. Next morning the car still starts, revs...no smoke or anything from the exhaust and idles fine. But from the left side of the engine there is a ticking noise...like tappets.

What could it be....if your engine gets that hot??? I expected it to have blown head gasket but it didn't.

I'm assuming you checked your oil to verify no water in it? How did you confirm no blown/cracked/leaking head gasket?

i'm assuming it didnt....just from past experiences....my friend is going to do a compression test tomorrow anyway.

But would it still start and idle fine if head gasket had gone....and fire on all 4 cylinders?
