cold temp engine knock/ bearing noise?

just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?. iv got a v3 sti and when you drive after starting it cold it knocks slightly while it warms up. sometimes it will last for 10 mins or so driving. its only really noticeable when you take off at low revs, after then the engine noise covers it. could this just be piston slap?

also, i have found when my car idles even when warm im getting a strange knocking/tapping that comes and goes. i.e it will knock 10 or 20 times with the engine revolving then go away and randomly come back at a later stage. at high revs it sounds pretty smooth and i cant notice any knocking. ive never heard bearing noise apart from peoples videos on youtube, but could this be bearings or would they make a constant knock and get worse with revs?

Without hearing it first hand my vote would be piston slap. I had a 2.5 in my previous outback that had it real bad, never caused any issues other than the sound of it though. I always hated it, synthetic oil seemed to make a nice reduction in it though.

The earlier STi motors were prone to piston slap as mentioned. At one point UK dealers were working on them only to have a decent number of units get the same piston slap after the repairs anyway. I don't think it affected longevity either, and eventually people just said "forget it." Ask around and see if other owners get similar noises. I'm betting they do.
