    Mine did that.

And then I figured out it was my fault.

With me personally, it was that I wasn't pushing the clutch far enough. I thought that I was but I moved my seat up and hasn't had that problem. Unless I feel lazy and don't push the clutch in all the way or I'm wearing heels. I would try that. I don't know if any other problems with 1st gear.

I used to have the same problem in my MX5 (granted different car) but what it was, I needed to replace the slave cylinder and bleed out the clutch. Does the clutch pedal feel spongy at all?

Synchros go out in 02-03.... Happens to almost everyone... Little grinding going into first... If you want it to stop you pretty much have to up it to the highest grade tranny lube you can get... and learn to not go to first until your to a complete stop... Or it will wear it down completely and you wont be going into first until your under 10 mph.

I have an 02 and my 1st gear started to do that every once in a while about year and a half ago, then last year I replaced the gear oil with castrol synthetic and the grinding went away for the most part. It went down from grinding every couple of days to maybe once or twice a month. I realize that I may have to replace the 1st gear synchro in the near future if I end up keeping the car for the next 3 years or so.
