If your year is covered, read this:
    Oil TSB for 2006+ Subarus

    Then look here:
    Oil Change

and above all look in your manual. Find something that meets the correct specs and change it at the correct intervals. If you are interested in how it performs, look into oil analysis, as it's infinitely more informative than opinions.

    Blackstone Laboratories - FAQ Gas

What's the best oil to use?

Ah, the million dollar question. We are an independent lab, so we don't make recommendations. It has been our experience that oil is oil, and either petroleum or synthetic-based oil will work well for just about any engine.

Come on, you're holding out on me. I should use synthetic, right?

Buddy, you should use whatever you want. Synthetic oil won't guarantee a longer engine life any more than my eating organic food will guarantee I'll live until I'm 90. We here at Blackstone generally use regular petroleum-based oil because honestly, it works just as well for us.
That being said, in the past, Mobil 1 (5w30 specifically) and RP have been problem oils.

I use conventional Castrol GTX 5w30.

I too had some problems with Royal Purple. Not to mention how much it costs for that gay purple bottle

I went with AMSOIL last change, just cuz I found a good price on some. I like it better than the Royal Purple I've used in the past for sure, but am always up for good oil and cheap prices... I think next I might try Motul or Eneos (?)

Just get a good filter, don't forget that. I like K+N but I'm sure the Subaru OEM one would be just fine...no Walmart crap brands though. And yea, what's up with that TSB on the banjo bolt screen stuff

OK great then you can try whatever interests you without worrying about meeting warranty requirements.
