    Engine Sound Question

I have a really dumb question. My 2002 WRX (stock) sounds like a toy RC car under the hood. I'm not talking about the turbo (even at idle it sounds like it) I've searched and searched and have not been able to find an answer on this. Why does it make this sound? I've never had a car that the engine sounded like this before.

we have some weird sounding cars... If you have a serious question it'd be best to have someone that knows the cars listen to it in person

Hey, Okatta, I'm now getting the same sound. . Seems to be coming from the alternator region but when I put my ear there it seems to come from the A/C COmpressor or the pulley for the Accessory belt. SOMONE PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!

unfortunately i haven't been able to find a video online. every video on youtube that isn't about racing or exhaust has a rod knock.

could be your a/c compressor. If your belt is too tight is will make a whining noise.

    Hey Okatta

Had a guy check mine out today. Seems like the pulleys are the culprits - Drive and tensioner. Possibility exists that it can also be the A/C compressor belt, but more than likely it's usually from th former two I mentioned. I also confirmed this possibility from NAISOC. Hope this helps.

So does this mean that the pulleys are bad?

does anyone have a clip that I can hear what the engine is supposed to sound like? All I can find are exhaust clips, or rod knock clips.

Take the AC belt OFF and see if it still does it ?

Tick is normal. You can do a few things to quiet it down.

ok, I recorded a sample via my iPhone. I've never used this app before, but the recording was uploaded to http://www.vkdvd.net/recordings/Unti...0227093309.caf
You should be able to download the file and listen to my engine. Please keep in mind that it's cold in Chicago and the car isn't warm. That and i dont know how good the audio quality will be since I recorded it with my phone.

Any info a out this sound and if it's normal is greatly appreciated. Thank you
