    Whirring noise from Engine

Hey guys, recently I've been noticing this whirring noise that seems to come from my engine and I'm not exactly sure what it is and how worried i should be about it. When i turn the car on it has this whirring noise while idling (it's not really loud but enough to annoy me if I don't have music on). As for how it sounds, sounds kinda like the noise when going in reverse. While driving it'll get louder and softer with the rpm. Any advice?

i had that problem a while ago. for me it was the ac pulley.

try turning on the ac and see if the sound goes away or goes quieter. that might help locate the problem...

I went to a garage and asked them to see if they can figure out what's wrong. They told me I need to get an AC tensioner pulley from Subaru and they'll change it for me. Anyone buy one before from Subaru that can give me a price check? And also, the noise started not even a week ago, anyone have a rough estimate on how long I can drive before the pulley dies and messes up my AC compressor? Thanks

they aren't expensive at all. the oem one is about $45. you can easily pick one up from the dealer, they usually keep a couple in stock.

plus it's not really good to have a bad pulley knowing that it is connected to many other components.
