    Is it the Alternator???

i have this scratching/grinding noise (more grind than scratch)in the general area of the engine bay in the pic that increases and/or reduces with speed (picture not of my car, just a sample).

i did a quick check of the belts and everything, but can't seem to locate it exactly.

    what could it be?

    Someone help me out here....

While the belts are off check the rollers and the tensioning mechanism. Sometimes a helper pulley's bearings may fail.

when i turn the car on/off it rattles slightly and then i hear the scratching. if i can't get it to the shop tonight, i'll check it out as much as i can.

OK I'd listen closely with the plastic covers off. If it's in that area still I'd remove the belts and check the tensioner pulley anyway.

it was shot... for now i just replaced it with a stock one until i get the pulley set in. not too expensive, they are about $45.

it's that i was getting a scratching sound, i checked around with the belts off like sd gr said and i found out the direct cause. as it got worse it kind of sounded like i had a supercharger while i was driving... if that can explain anything.
