    sti fuel cell problem

In the past couple weeks my 06 STI I've noticed when I fill my tank all the way up that it will only hold ten gallons and that's all, and only three quarters tank period... I called and talked to the dealer and they said that the problem may be in the filler neck or something with the valving in the filler neck?? Figured that I'd post and ask here and see if the problem I'm seeming to be having here is something someone else has had, or having or heard of?? I'm just stumped cause I remember when empty I could put round 14 gallons in and as said above now only 10 and off a tank now with only ten gallons I'm only averaging bout 225 to 250 miles a tank... Any ideas please let me know??

Fuel generates fumes that pass through the charcoal canister, and this canister is connected to a purge valve that in turn re-connects to the intake manifold. There should also be a valve in the fill neck so that you can get a fully "open" system to fill up. If the canister were to be damaged I suppose the filtration medium (charcoal) in the canister could clog the fill line's valve, not allowing the tank to vent fully. This would explain why you are not able to fill up entirely. The next time you run the car low on fuel, see if you can hear a psssshhh when you unscrew the fuel cap.

EDIT: I knew I'd run across this before. From the diagram it seems that if either valve is clogged the system cannot vent, so you won't be able to fully fill up.

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms, 1929
