    Benefits of Synthetic?

What are the benefits of it? I know you're supposed to be able to go longer intervals between changes, but does it provide anything else? Is it worth the extra cost? My dad gets 55 gallon drums of 5w30 for farm equipment that I use (free), but just wanted some opinions on it.
