What engines had head gasket issues?

    Hi all,

I've got a friend that I've more-or-less talked into buying either a new or used Subaru (year, model & engine undecided at this point). I know they had head gasket problems at one point, but I can't find a definitive answer as to exactly what engines were affected by it. I've been told that all engines from 1998-2004 had head gasket problems, regardless of whether they were 2.0s, 2.5s, SOHC, DOHC, turbo or NA, but I don't know if that's really the case.

Can someone shed some light on exactly what engines had issues?

    Thanks
