Bad Noises?!?!?

1. So when I'm driving around, I get a knocking sound everytime I accelerate. It sounds like its in the trunk, but I haven't found it. It even sounds like it could be in my tank...

2. When I first go into reverse when I first start the car, I let the clutch go and it sounds like there is a loose tool box in my trunk when I back up, and when i go again it's gone...

if this knock is at low speeds it sounds like a known issue that has been documented by subaru and i think there is a write up on it.

You ever change the fluid? I change mine every 15k miles and itc almost black. Thats with synthetic. If you have 30k + miles on the rear diff fluid, I would be willing to bet it has eatin itself.

04 Sti's came with a rear strut clunk.

But if you are sure its the diff, I'd start with a simple rear diff fluid change. and if its bad.....


Never fear!! Used r160's are cheap. Call up your local Subi dismantler and get a price.

i got my rear diff replaced under warranty. mine was making a horrible grinding noise when I was engine braking.

If you followed the maintenance schedule and are still under the drivetrain warranty, take it to the dealer and have them look at it and hopefully replace it.
