if this knock is at low speeds it sounds like a known issue that has been documented by subaru and i think there is a write up on it.

I still don't know how I got this car...
04 Sti's came with a rear strut clunk.
But if you are sure its the diff, I'd start with a simple rear diff fluid change. and if its bad.....
Never fear!! Used r160's are cheap.Call up your local Subi dismantler and get a price.

i got my rear diff replaced under warranty. mine was making a horrible grinding noise when I was engine braking.
If you followed the maintenance schedule and are still under the drivetrain warranty, take it to the dealer and have them look at it and hopefully replace it.
