Yes, I've concluded much the same. I'm going to be on the lookout for a compressor in the meantime but am not in a hurry at this point. Thanks!

    Follow up:

I purchased two new belts from the dealer and replaced both the A/C and alternator belt. Takes around 25 minutes or so, very easy to do. I also carefully aligned the freewheel pulley for the A/C belt tensioner, making sure the bolt is seated flat on the pulley face as I tightened it.

Noise is now reduced dramatically! No chirps or squeals. I do get a whirring sound when the clutch engages the compressor but am even less worried about it now than I was initially -- thanks everyone!

Thanks again. I chose the Impreza to drive into the Mojave yesterday afternoon, celebrating it's re-gained A/C performance (while going to dinner in Las Vegas). Car worked great.

I need to look closely at the belts in all my cars. I've learned that a belt that theoretically "looks fine" may slip even slightly enough to at least accelerate its own wear.

    Glad I found this thread.

Does anyone know where to get just the compressor clutch without having to buy a whole new compressor ($560+ from the dealer)? Everything runs fine on my AC, the clutch just doesn't engage.

    TIA

well..check to see if you have the correct high and low pressure in your lines, if there is not enough pressure the clutch won't engage anyway
    ...

it's going to be cheaper to just buy the new compressor in the long run anyway.

My '02 had the chirping sound before too. Then it got worse, more screeching. Turned out the belt just had become old and stretched out enough that the initial engagement of the AC compressor was enough drag to make the belt make noise for a split second until the speed of the pulley and the belt were matched.

I'd guess if everything else seems to work properly, you just need to tighten the belt a little bit. Or buy a new belt, old one might be stretched out beyond tolerance.

I'm afraid I've looked as well, when I initially suspected my clutch was failing -- no luck either. The cheapest route is to buy a few used compressors from wrecks (one at a time) and find one that works. Figure $100. Or, take the clutch out of an ex-tUnEd-now-cRaShEd car and keep the rest of the compressor body as a spare.

I once had a similar chirp, just after AC turned on, cured with belt tensioning.

I noticed a lot of red "deposit" on your picture. Mine has that too and is currently experiencing some serious whining issues. Anyone know what that's from?

Don't mean to try to hijack your thread, but maybe its clutch related or something...?

Save your money and check this out before you spend too much $$$...............>
My AC clutch would not turn on either, and at first I thought it was the clutch also, but I went with a hunch and decided to check if the refrigerant was low and it was so I recharged it ($20 myself) and Wa laaa! the clutch kicked back on within seconds. My Rex is a `03, and six years is enough time to be low on refrigerant naturally without a leak, no problems since.
