+1. Despite all the opinions, everyone agrees that you can't go wrong with Subaru Extra S 75w-90 gear oil.

Are their better options? Sure, but then you get into the realm of different opinions and varied applications.

In short, if in doubt, just go with Extra-S for the 5spd...

Isn't that the truth Just go with some Extra-S from Subaru. Make sure the dealer you go to knows what you're talking about. Ask to see the container or something even.

I'll be trying out the Extra-S when I get done with my USC I'm running right now (and shifts smooth as butter).

I thought you said you read the thread? jk

USC is Uncle Scotty's ****tail. I got mine through Grimmspeed:

    GrimmSpeed

And most Subaru dealers should have Extra-S in huge barrel drums that they use when people bring their cars in for service changes, etc. I don't think you can buy it from a dealer in quart bottles necessarily... just have to take your car there for the service...

    Metal Shavings in rear diff

I know someone posted this before but im new to this website and im not sure how to find it, but can anyone tell me if its ok or common for metal shavings to come out of the rear diff when u change the fluid??

The car has 75,000 miles and i dont think the owner before did a diff oil change.

    I used Mobil 1 75/90

Is my diff going to be ok??

It's normal for a small amount of residue to come out of the diff.

As long as there are no large metal particles or chunks coming out, you should be fine...

    1qt Redline Lightweight Shockproof
    1qt Pennzoil Synchromesh
2qts Castrol Hypo C Gear Oil

Put the Redline in, followed by the Pennzoil, then add 1 qt of Castrol. Then check the level on the dipstick. With the last quart of Castrol, add until the level in the dipstick is near the full hole. Do not overfill!!! Don't be surprised if after the 3rd bottle you see the dipstick on full. The capacity is supposed to be 3.7qts, but I have never been able to get near that in there, due to left over fluid that won't drain out.
