    help please (turbo cartridge?)

ok here goes....i have a 2006 wrx tr.... i pulled off my intercooler the other night to install a new beatrush pitching stopper and i noticed some tan/brown grease like stuff inside of the black pcv tubes that are mounted to the intercooler. so me and my friend cleaned them out and noticed the grease substance in the hoses as well(alot!) So this morning i call 3 different subaru dealerships and ask them what may cause that and all of them said they have no idea? wtf!!! worried at this point.... so i take it in to my local subaru dealership and they look at it quikly and say that it has a messed up turbo cartridge and they would not cover my warranty because it looked like the previous owner had put a downpipe on my car(my car is stock by the way and apparently missing a turbo heatshield) and i had no idea of this when i bought it. so please anyone have any ideas to help or what may cause that grease? thanks guys and gals

I'd suggest they need a better argument than that.
Is your car completely stock, all aftermarket parts have been removed?
What the previous owner did is only speculation.

    Get a second opinion.

What's the problem? A decent layer of gunk in the IC tubing is normal. Does your car boost and run well? Do you experience high oil consumption?

Sounds pretty normal to me. I would just clean it out. The dealership here sucks. Did they sell you the car?

did you buy the car from the dealer. if yes, you can dispute that they sold you the car as it came and there should not be a reason to deny your warranty issues. if you bought it from and independent seller, you are pretty much s.o.l., though you may try and talk to the service manager. I have seen this a lot with the bugeye's (not so sure for the newer ones, wouldn't think it matters much), but if you feel anything is wrong in running-wise, I would say argue it out. if that doesn't get you anywhere, call subaru of america.

thanks for the help guys. I didnt buy it from this dealer in particular but from one about 60 miles away and these guys are right by my house so i thought id give them a try. yes my car is all stock except for a couple of interior goodies. and they said the reason they "know" it had a downpipe was because of the missing heatshield.....my car is boosting right at target(around 11.5) and pulling a vaccuum of about 18hg. however when i get on the throttle mostly in second gear there are some "hiccups" could this be a result of a bad turbo? again thanks for the help..... ive come to realize i can rely more on the subaru community to help me as apposed to the dealership. they are very rude and unprofessional.

It's a tell tale sign that a car has had a performance downpipe on it if it's missing the heat shield, so in all honesty the dealer is probably right. I think there is a communication problem between you and the dealer. Can you get something in writing then scan and post?

If it's a bad turbo then TD04's are cheap. I'd be more concerned with the fact that you bought a car and have no idea of its history. You should get it checked out carefully. Was the original dealer a Subaru dealer? You might start with them if they were.

Did you get that in writing? My car came with a catless DP and they told me it was 100% stock (got it in writing on the bill of sale). The next week, I was in there and told them to put the stock one on, or I'd see them in court (in which they'd have lost their ability to inspect, and in turn, sell vehicles in NY) - they kindly obliged my request

If you didn't get it in writing, this may be a "lesson learned" type situation unfortunately. If the car was stock when they purchased it, and were a Subaru dealership, then maybe you'll be able to get them to pay for it (with some pressure). If they're not a Subaru dealership, they'll more than likely try to play dumb, and you'll have a tough time getting them to accept responsibility.

    Best of luck

So the sales department told you it was stock, now the service department tells you its not. I'd say they need to figure it out internally and fix your car.

Or you could just nuke 'em.

A lot of people like the FP green and the VF34/VF39

If you do upgrade the turbo, make sure you upgrade your fuel pump, injectors, exhaust, EM, and intercooler - it'll be more than just the cost of a new turbo

You'll probably need 565cc injectors (I believe that's what comes on the STi)

You can probably find a used STi TMIC on here - that would probably be your best bet unless you're going with something much larger than the VF34/VF39
