Loud sudden wind noise at 120mph

    Hey guys,

just bought my brand-spankin' new '07 STi.
So of course I take it for a few rides and find that at about 110 mph I get a sudden onset of a loud noise. It definitely doesn't go away at higher speeds (louder at 120 mph, couldn't test 130 and above). It is a loud, full-bodied whistling sound similar to a ship's horn or when you blow into an empty bottle at an angle. The noise is independent of the gear I'm in, so I say it's the wind. May come from the hood scoop.

    Any ideas?

    ThanX!!

    Thanks guys.

    It's a bit of a let-down though.
Living in Chicago but being from Germany, I drive on the Autobahn all the time (when I'm there) at speeds of 130mph to 150mph. While there is always wind noise obviously, I've never been in a car or on a bike that would produce such a penetrating loud sound. It's definitely due to a resonance somewhere, similar to musical wind instruments (e.g trumpet).

Hey, at least it's a riot without comparison to get up to those speeds!
I'll call my hood scoop 'trumpet' from now on.

    Thanks again.

This is normal in an STi. If you experiment, you'll probably find out that it doesn't always happen. It appears to be a function of something on the car in the air stream, and a particular cross current of wind. It'll scare the bejesus out of someone the first time they hear it. I know it did to me. If you search, there are a few old threads floating around about this noise.

Some put tape in the gaps on the mirror. Also, I hope with every ounce of my being, that your car was broken in before this high speed run.

Good to hear others have had the same experience. I definitely plan on using this car on the track, so I'll come across it again.
Yeah, first time I heard it, it was scary!

Actually, driving fast can be save and is fun especially with a car like this, but my position on this is probably tainted (or corrected?) by my upbringing in Germany. And lucky me coming from a rural area where there still are no speed limits on the Autobahn.

Anyways, thanx. I'm curious though whether there is an established name to this noise phenomenon, one that I could use to search the threads etc.?

Not that I know of. Speed Ghost would be an appropriate name.

    Its normal.

I have an 06 wrx that used to do it. It was the windshield molding where it met the roof on the passenger side top. There was a gap from factory between the body and molding. I squished it down several times and 2 summers in California hell fire sunlight cured the problem.

    Goes away at 145.1?
You can't be serious ! .... - or can you?

It's an enticing experiment, but no thanks without an empty airfield (or an Autobahn)
