    Oil fire

The oil in my car is leaking. I am using the subaru oil filter, I havent had any problems before, but when I was putting on my TBE i noticed alittle leak from the filter, it seemed kind of loose so i tightend it. Today, after about a week of driving with my tbe on i noticed smoke coming from the engine bay, seems like my car is leaking more and the oil is catching on fire. Now what should i do? should i do an oil change and replace the filter with an aftermarket brand? or return it to stock and bring it in to Subaru and have them deal with it??

They've had a batch of leaky filters. Check your filter part no. and compare it to the number you come up with from a search to see if that's it. Regardless, you need to remove the existing filter and replace it. You won't lose all your oil but you will probably lose a L or more, so have some oil on hand. Make sure there is no gasket from the previous filter stuck on the mounting surface (on the car) before installing the new filter, and wet the new filter's gasket with a little fresh oil before installing. Don't overtighten and you should be fine.

If your part no. is among the batch, you're not alone.

    Here you go:

    QUOTED:

    Turbo motor 2.0 or 2.5L - part number 15208AA09A

    10/12/05

Subaru has issued (snipped) the following statement:

    Quote:
Please be advised that oil filter, part number 15208AA09A, may potentially exhibit a small amount of seepage that is noticed during the installation process.

Although seepage is slight, we are requesting that all inventory of this part number be removed from stock immediately.....

Any Subaru filter for the car except the ones with that specific part number or any quality filter from someone like Purolator or Champion etc. will work fine. Keep your receipt for warranty purposes. Swap when the car is cold and you'll get less mess (maybe).
