    cruise control thingy

wondering if this is a common problem:

the cruise control knob/slider/whatever vibrates like a banshee and is drive me nuts. its getting the vibration from the steering wheel i assume, and has this high pitched buzzing noise when you go over bumps or uneven pavement. i know it is definately the cruise control thing cause if i hold it, the noise stops.

    anybody else have this issue?

I had that problem for a while, so I finally took the assembly apart to see if I could put some sort of padding in there to keep the cruise control main button to stop rattling. I didn't have anything to do the padding at the time, I just wanted to see what the inside looks like. When I put everything back together, it didn't rattle. That was easily 6 months or more ago. Hasn't rattled since...

I believe you need a small screwdriver set to get the cruise switch assembly apart. It only took a couple of minutes. Do a search. That's where I found a small writeup that someone did on this topic back then. Good luck!

If you search you can find a TSB on the cruise control switch rattle. My 05 WRX had the cruise control rattle and the rear differential howl. So I printed out both TSB's for those problems and had the dealer fix them both for free. The cruise switch just takes a small piece of tape. The circuit board inside is what is rattling around.

What did the dealer do for the rear diff howl? I notice a bit of a humming noise when I have the car loaded (with someone in the backseat or heavier cargo in the back) while going over dips, bumps, or sharpish turns at highway speeds. Could that be related? I'd like to get mine in soon if it's a warranty thing because I'm already at 27,500 miles.

    Thanks,

I am not positive is the noises you are describing are directly related but it is possible. Mine was a distinctive howl around 60-65 mph. When the windows were up and you let off the gas at that speed it resonated in the cabin and was annoying to say the least.

To fix the problem they replaced the upper differential support member and added to it two harmonic dampers. The harmonic dampers are the key. They bolted to the arms of the support member, one on each side adn were basically metal cases filled with hard rubber. They bolted down to the support member and absorbed the vibrations that were causing the howl. It reduced the noise by 90% for me. If you listen carefully you can still hear it but it is no where near what it originally was.

It is a TSB so technically it does not matter if you are under warranty or not. But it will be easier to convice them that is what it is if you are under warranty. My service tech claimed he didn't hear the noise, I told him I don't care if he heard it because I hear it every day and I want the harmonic dampers added anyway.
