Agreed, most of those oil additives are nothing but a scam. They don't work and in some cases may even accelerate engine wear. Take zMax for example, it was proven to be nothing more than colored mineral oil and I believe they have several lawsuits against them.

Bottom line..don't waste your money, just use a high quality synthetic motor oil.

    The FTC. Federal Trade Commission.

The funny thing is, many federal laws are based upon the ability of the federal govt. to regulate commerce. Like the law that makes it illegal to sell drugs in the vicinity of a school. That is a violation of federal law because the activity interferes with interstate commerce. Otherwise, the federal govt. would have no authority govern in the area of law where states typically have jurisdiction.

Go to http://www.ftc.gov/ and do a search for prolong, slick50, zmax, and the others.

Here is a quote from the zMax case.
This case is the latest in a series of FTC law-enforcement initiatives targeting unsubstantiated claims made by auto additive manufacturers. The FTC previously halted allegedly deceptive advertising by the marketers of Dura Lube, Motor Up, Prolong, Valvoline, Slick 50, and STP, other major brands of engine treatment products.
