Exclamation Quick Question about scheduled maint......

So I am set up on the "free" oil changes for life and have found this set up to be not so free. Do i really have to take it to the dealership to retain my factory warranty? They are trying to make me come in at 20,599 miles tellin me i am gonna have to get my 30,000 mile check up done (cuz in their minds every other time you come in you pay)...and i'm gonna have to pay about 5hundo. !! Do i seriously have to do this or can i just change the oil myself and wait till i'm actually at 30000 mile to take care of it, but still retain the warranty?? Please help cuz this seems ridiculous.......

You must use the correct parts and follow the correct schedule. You must also keep all receipts. Other than that, you are free to chose who performs the maintenance. Keep in mind though that in case of an error that causes a problem (and costs money) you'll be on your own to sort it out; since it's not Subaru's fault they won't worry about it.
The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry. Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms, 1929
