MT/WY: Beartooth & Cheif Joseph Hwys

This may be one of the most scenic drives in the US! And the driving is unbelievable to boot.

The Beartooh Hwy is only open from June to Oct/Nov and closed the rest of the year due to snow. The pass is at nearly 11,000 ft with breath taking scenery at every turn (too many turns to count ).

You can start from Red Lodge, MT and end up at either Cody, WY (by taking the Chief Joseph scenic hwy or go directly to Yellowstone Park via Cooke City- either way you won't be disappointed.

Your brakes should be in top notch condition as you gain/lose lots of elevation throughout.

the Beartooth hwy is off the chain! I'd love to hit that in my wrex, last time I was on that road I was in my dads suburban and it damn near choked out 'cause that oxygen was gettin so sparse up near the top. hopefully a turbo would improve that a lil' bit . But, if you slid off one of those cliffs up there, thats a long ass freefall til you explode on impact.

One of my favorite drives is the canyon between Great falls and Helena. Really makes me want to get some suspension upgrades. Haven't hit the beartooth in my rex yet. hopefully this summer I'll make the trip.

It'll have to wait for next summer unfortunately- they got some really bad slides this spring that wiped out several sections of the road, they hope to be done by fall. Will hurt the town of Red Lodge pretty bad I'm afraid.

Sorry to dig up the old thread.

I was wondering if any of you are planning on hitting up the Chief Joseph Highway this summer? I've been wanting the opportunity to drive my Subaru up there since I got it. A few friends of mine are planning a drive up that way at some point, and I wondered if the Subie community might take any intrest in heading up that way at some point.
