Talking NM: Abq - Santa Fe (Backroads)

The drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe using 505 to 501 is amazing! It starts out as a fairly normal flat drive through the mesas, but takes you into the mountains, up some incredible climbs, into a national forest, then down to 501. Along the way, you get some curves that hairpin to the point of touching corners.

The views are great and it changes from desert to temperate to fields back to desert.

If you have the opportunity, give it a shot! You won't regret it.

One word of warning... Once you hit Jemez, be sure to avail yourself of bathroom facilities! They can be a little sparse, though Battleship Rock has a park bathroom and is a great stopping point.

I think he's talking about the road from Cuba through Jemez Springs and over to Los Alamos. It's a fabulous drive, but usually has too much traffic, especially in the summer.

I was on that road on a motorcycle in 1970 when I came around a turn and found a bear sitting in the middle of the road. Jemez hot springs is cool if you have any hippy tendencies.
