Not a terrible idea overall but plasti dip is pretty weak structurally. I honestly think you would've been better off to go with a clear coat solution or a permanent clear bra. I hope you put it on real thick because the thinner it is, the more it will rip and come apart rather than stay together when removing it. But if you were willing to do this I'm sure you already know that. Not stupid, should last, but certainly better options for this. I'd honestly be interested to see how well it holds up over time.
Well normally I wouldn't do so, but since you said to . . .
Stupid!
Well now that I called you stupid as requested . . . I actually think what you did is worth the attempt . . . see how it does this coming winter. Even if it doesn't work really well you're just out some time and short cash.
Good read, honestly this did cross my mind since I already do have spots where paint has been chipped. I wouldnt be surprised if it takes some paint off. Just adds more insult to injury against the case of subaru's paint being ****.
It comes off as tacky and cheap though. If you like it more power to you I guess. I agree with the others you should dip the whole car so it doesn't look like your car just came out of a chop shop(or didn't have enough money to paint the other parts). Imo
Bruh, After 6 years of wearing ACU's in the army with the digital "camouflage" patter, Nothing comes close to tacky or cheap :rotfl: But I can see where you are coming from.
It looks like it came out well, and even. I'm a big fan of matte black. Just take it off after 3 months and it should be fine, that is if you sprayed it on thick like someone else mentioned. I left it on my Mazda wheels for about a year and it was a pita to remove. Actually some of it is still on. I have black plastidip by the gallon and a paint gun, and that seems to be the best way to apply it, though I most likely won't use it on my new WRX.
My thoughts on this sort of thing: It's a Subaru, not a Saleen. Rock chips are a fact of life, and it's best to just live with the fact that regularly driven cars will have wear and tear on them. I stopped caring about the paint the instant I bought my car (although it was already used), and instead focused on keeping it mechanically sound. I'd probably feel differently if the car was brand new, but again, it's a Subaru.
That said, I understand how awful road salt is on cars, and gravel certainly doesn't do the front clip any favors, so I get what you're trying to do. Post back at the end of the season with pics on how it held up and how easily the dip comes off. I do not that the dip on my winter wheels did a great job protecting them from gravel and other dirt, but I just dipped them for the color, not for protection.
