Fins are so malleable they will bend back/break off if I straighten them.

If your claiming that the fins are malleable, then someone definitely pushed them in.

no, debris combined with heatsoak, debris being freezing rain/salt, would have been sufficient to bend them.

Sorry, heatsoak won't cause fins to do that.

Yeah nothing about this thread makes sense anymore unless this guy works for grill craft and is just trying to push the product. Haha

    +1

Subaru has been selling cars forever with top mount IC and if that sort of thing were actually common I think everyone would have noticed it before now. Lol

Just use a fin comb. The fins are soft but they don't just break off easily. Lol. Seriously it's not like they just started making these things. Does anyone actually think they are the first to sit in traffic for hours, even in a snow storm? If that were all it took to damage the IC as bad as the pic, all the Subaru dealers in Atlanta would be inundated with work from the storm a few weeks ago where people where stuck on the interstate for 12-24 hours lol

Some thing almost certainly thing hit the fins in the pic in this thread.. Not heat, not snow, not freezing rain or even all that combined.... Something like an animal/object/finger etc. Quite honestly it looks like it was purposely damaged by somebody because I've never seen inter cooler fins that uniformly bent on a wrx. I'm not going to say its impossible but no that just doesn't happen because of weather and traffic. Maybe if you were trapped on the highway in a locust swarm or something lol

This is off topic, but does anyone know if it's safe to take the heat shield off the vf52??

I would never do anything to damage this thing, it's a $35k car and I'm still making payments on it, only thing I could thing of is heat from the motor making the fins soft and ice/salt hitting it at +50MPH bending/mashing them down.

Dude. GTFO. Way off topic. No it's not safe...that heat shield not only keeps heat away from intercooler but it always keeps away that killer debris and salt and snow.

If you were getting hit with that much salt and ice at 50+ mph to bend the fins on your IC like that, you would have cracked windshields, no paint left on the bumper, cracked headlights, dented hood, etc....

I wasn't suggesting you personally damaged it but it looks like somebody with something did. Maybe it was unintentional...I could see maybe somebody tried to clear snow off the car and jammed a snow brush or a broom or something in the hood scoop... Or something. Idk. But I don't think that sort of uniformed fin damage is not something that typically just happens while driving.

Agreed. That is not normal damage.
