    Painted my I/C...Epic Fail

I've got my flame suit on for this one. So over Thanksgiving break I decided to take a day to do some DIY mods, so I cleared my headlights and it turned out awesome, then I decided to paint "WRX" on my intercooler. I took it off the car and spent a good hour and a half picking out the little pieces of gravel and straightening out the fins. Then I taped off the outside of the intercooler and spent another hour meticulously taping off a perfect WRX logo, and then painted it with black engine paint. I was particularly proud of myself because it was looking great...until I took all the masking tape off and realized where I had gone completely wrong. I'll let the picture explain...

I my girlfriend saw my face as I unwrapped it and immediately started cracking up. I was obviously pretty mad at myself but I couldn't help but bust up laughing, especially since I had told myself earlier in the day that I had to pay attention because it would be easy to make this mistake.

I wasn't going to post this out of embarrasment but it's just too good to keep to myself, so I hope you all get some enjoyment out of my stupidity!

Also any suggestions as to where to go from here would be helpful. Does anyone know if paint thinner will remove dried engine paint? Or should I just paint the rest of the inner section black and re-do WRX in silver?

Put a mirror in your hoodscoop!

I can't see how paint thinner would hurt the IC. I'd likely give that a try.

I call BS... It looks photoshopped...

IF it isn't... Did you use dispersant paint ? If you did.... Paint the entire thing black the do a silver or red.

On a side note....Nice engine bay

I'm sorry, but that's pretty funny.

I actually wouldn't mind having it upside down though.

lulz. Paint decreases the heat transfer capability of the intercooler though, fyi.

I hadn't even thought of the paint reducing heat transfer. Is there a special paint that transfers heat better? I searched google quickly for radiator paint but all it came up with is radiator paint for old style radiator heaters, like in a house, nothing for car radiators. If there is such a thing, where would I find it?

I am not sure, the thinner the better obviously, or perhaps some type of paint with metal in it. The lettering doesn't look like it takes up a tremendous amount of area though, so I'm not sure how much it affects it

x2 for mirror under the hood ... I dont think the paint will make a difference so long as you didnt cake it on between the fins... (as to block air flow)

Engine paint is tough stuff... I would recommend aircraft paint stripper (pick it up at your local smyth paint center)... I would look into it a little though as im not sure if it will hurt the THIN aluminum... I have used it on thicker aluminum and it didnt pit or anything. I would just cover all your bases..

EDIT--- I WOULD NOT paint over it and re paint it... then you would be hindering the coolers performance.

Thank god you did this to remind me to pay close attention before i paint my intercooler.

I havent quite decided what im doing yet though, i think i might go for the 06 wrx look with the black outside while leaving the fins untouched.

Personally i wouldnt try paint thinner, just seems kinda risky.

that's awesome. but like previously stated, the aircraft paint removal would be best shot, they sell it at advance auto parts. just in case, i would do it upside down so it doesn't drip into the IC or anything.
