    Older STI for the wife

So, my wife drives a 2012 Jeep liberty and she likes it, but there is a local dealer who has a 2004 WRB STI for sale. She really loves the car.

The crazy thing is, the car is an 04 with only 5000 miles. It is super clean and has an extra set of original gold BBS wheels with snow tires on it. The dealer is a friend of a friend so he hasn't given me a final price yet. My question is, what things should I be concerned about and what should I offer for the car? I would love to buy this thing and have my wife and I both driving subies!

Thanks, here are a few pictures I took of it yesterday.

I think the question begs to be asked: WHY does it only have 5k miles on it?

    Is the price reasonable?

You may have just found a UNICORN!

But I'm with zax- why. Wondering if she's on her 2nd (or 3rd) motor. What's the engine bay look like?

I thought the same thing!! It is the original engine, the car was owned by a dealer. It was only driven with a dealer plate. It has never been titled...the dealer told me he was thinking of selling it for $24,000. I feel like it can be negotiated though...

At $24,000 you'd be better off spending the monies on a 2015 WRX I'd think.

That's definitely a bargaining chip for me! Thanks!

Should I low ball him at $17,000?

I understand that it's a unicorn. It only has 5,000 miles which is less than my 2015! But the car IS 11-12 years old.

The price you'd be willing to pay is a reflection of how bad you want to flex your nostalgia muscles.

That being said, the 2004 has that 35:65 F/R torque split which is a hoot to drive.

My 04 STi was a great car and really fun. It was my daily driver and I loved it. However, the 04 STi will definitely not be a "comfortable" car for most folks though. It's very stiff, lots of road noise and wind noise, etc. etc. You have to really love the experience of the drive to not get tired of it before too long. Especially since it not only isn't particularly comfortable but it lacks all the more recent amenities available on cars now. Heck my 04 STi didn't even come standard with any radio let alone steering wheel controls or blue tooth. Lol

When you say she "loves the car", how much has she actually driven it? Not saying she can't or won't still love it but just that she should really make sure she understands what it will be.. the good and the bad, before she buys it.

Also, the story still sounds a little wierd to me so personally I would be very cautious. I would seek a local reputable subaru tuner and ask them to check it out at the very least.

Good luck and keep us posted.

To whatever price you agree, if you agree at all, add at least $2,000 USD for maintenance and expendables. The car will need a full 105K service since it's exceeded the time limit and the service is now due regardless of whether the car has been driven meanwhile or not. Also, the car has 12-year-old tyres that should be recycled, all fluids are 12 years old and should also be recycled, etc. On the bright side the wheelsets are probably capable of fetching $1K each on the market to other 5X100 hub owners.

It's an expensive car after all, especially since it's a 2004 model that was known for 1994 creature comforts even when new.

How much is a brand new WRX again?...

2015 WRX for that money. Unfortunately there are people who will pay for the asking price of 24k. Im betting if a history can be proven he would fetch at least 20k on ebay easy.

What all does the 105k service include?

nvm, i just looked it up. Good thing is that both sets of tires are new. I agree though, if we proceed i will pay a local tuner to come check it out in depth.

+1 to the 105k service. Even though my car only has 79k, she will be 9 years old this year so I'm doing my 105k service next week
