Question about people checking something near their tires at the strip.

BOUTTA WEEK AGO… I was at the track in my stock 2011 WRX (super fast). Anyways, I'm somewhat new to drag racing and for some reason in the staging lanes I was watching a 9 second civic (Mofo was fast..) pulling something out near his front tires and holding it up and looking at it, I'm somewhat curious as to what he was checking, tire pressure? Some sort of fluid? Not much later I saw a 11 second STi doing the same thing, but he had a part of his bumper tore off while he was doing it… If someone could explain to me what exactly they were checking before they hit the tree, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks guys!

    So super fast...

More than likely checking tire pressure. Or their tire fluid. It's vital to make sure the drag tire fluid is at optimum levels otherwise it blows bumpers off like you saw.

they were probably measuring their brake pads to ensure they had enough pad left to stop after that super high speed pass....

    Captain Buzzkill to the rescue!

They're most likely letting some air out of the tires for better traction off the line. If the cars were on drag slicks (and a 9 second car probably is), they could also be checking the tire temperatures.
