Subaru has a large enthusiast following and makes relatively cheap vehicles-- but this may be said about many manufacturers. The perceived cost-to-performance (an arbitrary metric for road going cars) of the WRX was appealing (especially in the used car market). Although there are many better cars, the community of other enthusiasts has helped my interest remain engaged in this car.

The reasons I bought the car (I'm on my third one)

    AWD

    Performance to cost ratio

    Turbocharged engine

Sounds amazing with an exhaust on it

    Safety ratings

Great to drive in the winter

I had to give up my v8 Grand Cherokee due to fuel cost. I had also a Suzuki Sidekick, it was very reliable and cheap on gas. Had NO "go" at all. I wanted something with just about that practicality, but some performance without sacrificing mpg's. The wife wanted 4 doors and the AWD is good in my location and with my job. Manual was a given as I was looking to have some performance and economy with a small(ish) 4-cylinder, turbo was not required but would be OK. Only car I found that had it all was the WRX. End of story...

I wanted AWD and something that is fun to drive but that can also carry my gear for camping, surfing, climbing, etc. The manual transmission was a must as was general reliability. I don't care too much for large vehicles so a small wagon is perfect and similarly sized to what I previously owned.

Subaru has long been a symbol of well-meaning dorkiness, a sort of "Japanese Saab" but without the yuppy stigma. People that own anoraks buy Subarus.

I bought mine because it was well priced for the performance at the time, and I'm the type of person that'd wear sensible shoes.

^This, plus It's extremely outdoors-capable and match my lifestyle in that sense. I like the outdoors and performance cars, but can only afford one car.

My WRX wagon combines utility, safety, and a raw, non-FWD driving experience. There are surprisingly few (affordable) options out there that combine these factors.

AWD, Performance, Space (5-door), price, and it's the solid fit of my needs and wants in a car.

It's a good value and is the best fit for my lifestyle.

In terms of the Impreza WRX and WRX STI's it's the perfect cross between fun and practicality

It's a performance car with just over 260 HP stock
All Wheel Drive makes for an all year round drive-ability sports vehicle which is a huge plus for those of us who live somewhere that it snows.
The stock motor is quite reliable if left stock. Along with Subaru's being reliable as a whole. They are just genuinely long lasting cars
The Subaru community is similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler or Chevrotlet Corvette community, at least in my opinion it is.
Oh yeah and did I mention the the awesome balance between daily drive-ability and throw you back into your seat performance? with a substantially lower price tag than most of it's competitors that I would place in the same category as this car

This is my first one, I've only had it for a couple of months now and I'm already in love.
