It is a small electric air pump that pumps air into the heads, at the rear of the engine. As others said, this forces teh engine to run lean on a cold start to heat the cats. When you start your car in the morning, get back out and stand by it for about 45 seconds...you will hear the idle change when the pump turns off.

If you wanted to remove it, there are delete plates you can buy, and this site has a pretty good how-to (though they are doing it on an engine stand rather than in the car):
    delete them bitchesl

Deleting it makes getting to the drivers side spark plugs a lot easier that's for sure.

Thanks for the link DemonWRX. Now I know what it is and where it goes. Since I leased the car and don't plan any major mods I will leave it on the car. I could hear it running this AM when I started the car and left it idling while I put out the garbage and recycle bins.

The warranty lasts as long as the lease so someone else can deal with replacing the pump if it goes bad and I doubt it will need spark plugs before I turn it in at the end of the lease.

42 months with 10k miles per year. I went for the lower miles because I only put 15k in 3 years on the Suzuki SX4 Crossover I had leased before the Subie. I have four vehicles and one driver but I plan on putting more miles on the WRX than the Suzuki.
