For tint, I'd recommend Shades of Gray in PA, and I know a few others that will highly praise them as well.

Hard to say whether you'll get pulled over frequently or not, but I, personally, got pulled over quite frequently when I had tint on my old car. Which is exactly why my WRX isn't tinted.

I have used both and both are really good. In my experience the cops around here use K an KA band not X. x= supermarket doors . They also use laser but that is undetectable till its too late anyway. I found that the ESCORT 8500 would detect cops farther out than the V1, but the V1 gives you the arrows so you are less likely to hear it go off but not spot the cop. If you want, I have my oooold 8500 that I could sell you for $50 when you pick up your car. I have not used it since I got a gold pba card

Another questions do you guys have any advice for shops for both mods and basic maintance?

I would ask for tint recommendations but it seems Lee Berbs the place to go to. But this leads to me my next question...Will have tint (40% or so) on my front windows get me pulled over regularly? I haven't seen that many cops in Mt Laurel area but that doesn't mean they aren't out there....I just dont feel like getting pulled over and having to deal with the police even if I get a warning most of the time.
I'm not sure about your area, but I used to have tints (20%) on my Mustang and I got pulled over all the time up north. I really want to tint my WRX, but I'm still weighing the pros/cons like you are.

I've never seen (or heard of) 40% tint. I've seen 35% and 50%.

You will get pulled over for little stuff like tints/no front plate in NJ no doubt. Best tint shop IME in north NJ is Ziebart on rt 23 N in Riverdale, ask for seth.

What color is your WRX? Tint looks different on every car. On a black car is usually looks slightly lighter or not tinted (especially with a black interior), but on a white car, even light tints stand out.

Then also take into account how noticeable the car is in general (if you're driving with traffic which color is going to catch someone's eye). I have WRB, so it's bright, and would attract more attention than a black, grey, or silver. So I would be more likely to be spotted than someone next to me with a black car with the same tint.

One issue that I have been noticing (and it's not a problem with the V1), since Infinity, Mercedes, and Mazda have started using radar and laser speed control, laser warnings have been going off much more frequently.

rexxx0486 is right. Most cruisers around here are equipped with a K or KA band radar. I haven't noticed any local cruisers (to my recollection) equipped with laser or lidar. But staties will have both, so anytime on the GSP, Turnpike, or interstates, you have to be on the lookout.

The only hope you have with laser is that the cop aims at someone else first and your radar/laser detector alerts you. But if you get hit with laser, by the time your radar goes off it'll already be too late.

That's a good point. My car is white so the color doesn't stick out, but the tint on it will. Everytime I try to picture the car it has tint, just adds so much to the car IMO.

my buddy has a V1 and i have an X50 and they are both great radar detectors. i think a lot of it depends on where you live. around here, X band is not used by cops so i have it disabled in the X50 (nice feature). K and Ka are the ones you have to worry about. over many, many years using radar detectors i honestly can't remember more than maybe once or twice that laser was ever detected. i don't think any cops use this, not sure why.

in any case, the best detector in the world won't detect the cop waiting for you a mile down the road with his lights out on a country road and his gun in standby. i should know . once they flick it out of standby and your detector goes crazy, it's too late. they always know you have a radar detector too, because you slam on your brakes and slow down before they even turn the car on to come after you. it ain't illegal around here and the cops don't seem to mind, so it's no big deal.

I had tint on all 5 windows back on my first STI and drove all over South Jersey and Philly with it. Never once got stopped...complete with hood scoop and loud ass exhaust. If you don't drive like a jerk, then you won't get much attention

Don't go getting some super dark tint, and you'll be fine. I had 30% all the way around. A darker interior is going to enhance the darkness of the tint and make it look better (direct from the installer's mouth...and he was right).

And for the record, I used Shades of Grey for that tint job and they were awesome. Quality tint, done quickly, and great price. The owner also used to have a built STI and knows Subarus very well. I'll always point new customers towards them.

Shades of Grey actually did the overlays on my car, so yes, they do them.

Thats definitely good to hear and makes sense. Yea seams like shade of grey got a ton of good reviews. Do you know any local shops cause as I said being in an apartment complex its tough to do some of the DIY? Or is the subby community good about help other members out if beer and food is provided?

The Subaru community tends to be more budget-friendly, so beer/food (which is always a solid bartering item) is often accepted as payment methods...

Thats good, I already have plans to put on a short throw and nameless exhaust. Would love to get my hands dirty and learn/do it myself (with the help of some others).
