The turbo is not part of the engine, neither is a lot of stuff they probably kept and sold off for profit.. and $3,000 for a used engine is more than twice what it should really cost.

We bought a used 85,000k mile engine to replace our original 189,000k engine from a salvage yard. Because the turbo was still good from the original engine, we asked to have it returned to us for resale. After the engine was put in at the dealership, we asked where the turbo was and they told us the entire old engine had to go to the salvage yard. This was never told to us beforehand and we never signed anything stating this would be done. The way we see it, that old engine was our property and we paid $3,000 for the used engine. Does this sound like a normal procedure? Aren't they just making money off of our parts?

That doesnt sound right man, at my dealership we have a "customer bill of rights" and one of the items on it is " you have the right to reclaim your used parts as long as they were not replaced under warranty"

Yeah, it's your engine in the first place...they have no right to sell it unless you contractually give it up. I'd flip some **** if I were you.

Good luck man.
Well apparently they charge a core fee if you don't send them yours in exchange. My main complaint is with the dealership for not disclosing this to me at the time I told them I wanted one of the turbos back so I could sell it.
So they took your turbo and gave you a replacement? Now I'm confused. .
Ya, sorry for not explaining more. The car is an 04' WRX 2.0 L with turbo with 189,000 miles on it.
The exhaust valve in cylinder 2 failed, so we went with a replacement used 85,000 mile engine that the dealer got from a salvage yard. The used engine came with a turbo and some other components like a water pump and manifold.
Our original turbo was working great, so we asked to have that before we gave the approval for the go ahead of the engine swap. Nothing was mentioned at the time of the request about the engine and turbo needing to be sent to the salvage yard in a core exchange....and ya, this shouldn't include the turbo.
As pissed off as we are about the turbo, I'm really pissed about our receipt not mentioning anything about the mileage on the installed engine (in case we decide to sell the car), or the 6 month warranty we were told we get.
I may be wrong but I thought it is against any Subaru dealer's franchise agreement to sell you salvage yard parts... Did you supply the engine or did they get it for you?

I would want the serial # off the used engine you purchased be careful they may have kept the lower mile engine for there self
That's just a very strange situation.. every dealership I know of will only deal with new OEM parts. Never heard of a dealership willing to source you a used engine.
Resale an almost 200k turbo? Either way when i enter places where things like that are going to happen i make sure to get everything in writing before a wrench touches my car.

Ok so I checked with my service manager and Subaru dealers are technically allowed to put used parts in a car with the customers consent, we just have a policy here at my dealership that we won't do it.
