Are you certain you are calculating the mileage correctly?

I ment to be easy on the car... Give it at least a couple hundred miles before I started driving it hard... It was more like 12 miles lol. It's got 500 miles on it now and runs like a charm. I haven't gotten better than 16 mpg. Every time I try to drive it slow... It just doesn't happen. The Evo protested where the Wrx seems like a willing companion. I really should drive my car nicer. Every time I look at it, i drive the hell out of it. I read threads where people talk about how they get tons of mileage out of clutches and tires, I am not one of those! Thanks Scoob for not breaking yet!!
Anyone else have this problem?
Are you certain you are calculating the mileage correctly?

Here here! I drove it hard today and nothing happened =P
I'd be happy to see anything better than the usual 17mpg I get...

the computer tells me 20-22. How accurate is that thing? Does it calculate idling time in the equation?
The onboard MPG calculator isn't that accurate. The few times I did the calculation the computer was off by a couple MPGs. If you want a true calculation, you have to do it the old fashion way.
OP: I had the same issue when I bought mine back in '10. I manage to control my lead foot much better now that I used to. Just give it some time, your MPGs will get better.![]()

ive found my onboard mpg calculator to be close, usually off by half or one mpg

A few tidbits based on years of observation and reading:
Be sure to use the "old fashioned" method as it is most accurate. Use the same gas pump - do not top off when the nozzle shuts off for a reference. Buy gas early in the morning when it is at its most dense. Use the same grade of fuel, at least 91. 93 is best.
Mileage is at its worst when it is cold outside, the colder it gets the lower then numbers will be.
Be sure your tires are properly inflated. Consistent pressures from tankful to tankful will yield the best comparisons.
An improper wheel alignment will use more fuel.
Compare similar routes (commuting, etc.) for more meaningful results.
All I can think of now.
