Keep a 24 hour emergency kit in there: matches, first aid, some protein bars and some water. Definitely an ice scraper, some gravel or kitty litter would be good, and yes a small shovel.

Winter is closing in and I was wondering what most people keep supplied in their cars for the bad winter weather.
Now I know most of you might sayWell you have a Subaru and Winter tires what more do you need.???
Im looking for items to help your fellow motorist that may not have a Subrau.
Forget some of the things you might find in a road safety kit
jumper cables
an extra pair of gloves
road flares/signal blinkers
Mylar Thermal (silver foil) blanket
flash light
Im looking for more unique things:
Folding shovel/Entrenching tool (also good against zombies)
tow straps???
kitty litter

Good news, everyone!
I got a Subaru extreme weather kit with the Forester (thanks to one of our vendors). It comes with a small shovel among other things. Otherwise in the WRX I always have a small shovel . Flares ,water , a lighter,a multi tool knife,& warm gloves are always present in both cars.

Basically all of that ^
Depending on how bad snow is, sometimes I'll put my tow hook on the front before I go, God forbid I need it.

haha kinda, you never know...
keeping it in there saves time if you decide to help someone who's stuck, or need to get out of something yourself.

I keep whatever assorted garbage is in my back seats from the previous summer/fall seasons. Usually water bottles, some candy/cookie wrappers, straws, lids and cups from fountain sodas, etc.

^ the literal junk food...
You can't have everything - where would you put it?
My trunk usually has: rope, a toolkit, an axe, extra blankets and towels, protein bars, a gallon of water, a spare change of cold weather clothes and a survival guide I've read but like to keep handy just in case.
as well as an assortment of sports and hiking gear, and an inflatable raft with an oar.
Tow Strap
First aid kit with food and a gallon of water or sports drink
Extra layers especially socks
Extra gallon of washer fluid
quart of oil
Metric ratcheting box wrenches
Metric Socket set
Phillips and flat head screwdrivers
2 sets of jumper cables
tarp to lay down on in snow
flint/steel/magnesium survival tool
flashlight
Emergency flashing beacon
And the less usual ones,
metal avalanche shovel
Snow saw
Avalanche probe
Avalanche Beacon
Skis/boots/poles
Ice scraper... Tank at least 1/4 full at any time... that's it for me...

If/when it snows I have a little go bag with a couple tow straps,com-a-long and a Gerber folding shovel. I generally keep a mechanics bag in the trunk all the time with an assortment of tools, first aid kit and a tire patch kit with a mini air compressor. Also have several L.E.D. flashlights handy.

Don't keep it in the car though.
