I believe its 13psi max and tapering by redline on a WRX...but that is for MY02-07s...not sure on a 96. I assume you're overseas somewhere?

yes i am.when boosting the gauge will climb to 14 then settle at 10-11 so im jst guessing that 10-11 is standard.but surely it shouldnt climb so high then fall

That actually sounds quite normal. 2.0L WRXs spool to full boost by about 3100rpms give or take and hold strong and then it tapers down as it hits about 5800 give or take RPMs until redline. This is to protect the engine as RPMs climb to redline coming from the factory tune. A tuner can tune this differently

What kind of boost gauge are you using? If I'm not mistaken peak boost on WRXs was a little higher than 13, say 13.5psi or so, which explains why it gets to 14 or near 14psi.

Someone else should be able to confirm.

my gauge is jst a cheapo but should still accuratley read.do u have any thoughts on y it mite somtimes reach that 13-14 psi then spike to 16 and cut out instead of settling back to that 10-11 mark?its very random sometimes can drive 4 a length of time with no problems then bang.

oi you said the last guy did an exhaust job.. is there a cat/converter in the exhaust system? if it dont have one then there will be no back pressure on the turbo and you will get boost spiking! i found a vac diagram for the turbo setup to. apparently in the newer models they did a pill with a bigger hole in it to compensate for the free flowing exhausts. but it talks about an access port whatever that is haha

    13.5psi max for 02-05's.
    11.6psi max for 06-07's.

I refuse to believe that subaru made a WRX after 07 so I don't know the stats on those by heart.

What do you mean by spike and cut out?

Are you getting fuel cut and going into limp mode?

What modifications do you have and what form of Engine Management (EM) are you using?

when doing a boost pull in 4th gear when you hit about 4000rpm and the boost spikes to approx 14 to 16psi something cuts causing the car to jolt like you stamped on the brakes for half a second and then comes right then does it again at about 5000rpm. then is fine to the redline as the boost drops anyway. how can you tell if its fuel cut or what? wood boost spike cause a fuel cut? does limp mode come off automatically when the boost drops again or do you have to reset manually? im the other guys brother by the way. as far as i no the car is standard apart from a 3" exhaust job. so im guessing whatever standard em comes in the car.

    Thanks

The Check Engine Light doesn't come on??

    That's troubling to me...

Sounds like the car was previously tuned by a moron that had some other stuff on it, and they disabled the CELs.

When Boost Cut comes into play, the CEL should come on, and the car will go into limp mode to protect it's self.

You need to take the car to a tuner and have it tuned for that exhaust... They'll put a fresh tune on the car and you shouldn't have this problem at all.

Is there ANY modification AT ALL to the boost control system? No manual boost controller or anything?

check engine light dont come on that i no of! would it stay on or just flash at the time of whatever is going wrong? does the limp mode stay on or come off on its own also?

as for manual boost control it came with a boost controller but it was just in the glove box haha can you point me in the direction of an instillation guide for a boost contorller?

can you tune with the factory ecu?

    cheers

damn... It sounds like you got a pre-modified and hastily put back to stock car.

Take the car to a subaru specific high performance shop and have them look it over, and then go get a tune for that exhaust.

I'd love to help you, but without being able to see the engine bay up close and personal, it sounds like it was modified, tuned, and then put back near to stock... Hastily.

yes.. you can tune with the factory ECU... that's what a tuner will do.

With boost cut, the CEL Will stay on, and cruise control light flash... and it will stay in limp mode until the ECU is reset.

I realise that the tuner tunes with the ecu..... only reason i asked if the factory ecu was tuneable is because i have a series 8 rx7 and the factory ecu in that was untuneable therefore to tune i had to get an aftermarket ecu...

is there anyway we can check to see if the cel actually works? is there a test to do to make it go or?

and if it stays in limp mode untill the ecu is reset then i dont think its going into limp mode.

We didn't have the pre-02 WRXs in the united states, and I'm not 100% on exactly how the ECU works in relation to the CELs, and Limp mode.
