My intercooler isn't covered at all is that a problem?

I removed my intercooler. It is a very large restriction to the incoming air. My WRX is at least 4 miles faster without it.

some folks do cover the intercooler w/ a wire mesh to prevent the fins from bending (rocks/bugs/etc)

some put the screen right on the intercooler



other put the screen in the scoop



a fellow here did some testing and found that the mesh slightly decreases the performance of the intercooler, but not by too much- the scoop insert more so than the one directly on the intercooler- especially when measuring cooling off times
