    Subaru's Formula 1 engine (flat-12!)

Has anyone heard of the flat 12 engine Subaru produced in 1990? 3.5 liter, 600 hp @ 12,500 rpm's! It is a shame it wasn't more successfull.

Wow, nice find! 600 hp is kind of weak for F1 ... maybe it was more competitive then?

    Interesting page.

    Doesn't sound like a contender, but interesting nonetheless. I <3 F1.

This was right at the end of the turbo era in F-1. While the turbo engines (1.5 liter twin turbo V-6's) were making 1000-1200 hp in qualifying trim (about 70-80 psi of boost!!!) and 750-900 hp in race trim, the best NA engines were 550-650 hp. Most manufacturers were beginning to go to NA because they knew the turbos were going to be banned in '92. So 600 from the Subie engine is not bad at all.

I actually saw that race in Montreal. Don't really remember it too well. Just that those guys had to pre-qualify. A lot of people were experimenting with motor configurations back then. I remmeber the Life W-12 being a Porsche badged project but perhaps I'm mistaken.

The flat-12 has a long history in racing, campaigned famously by Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes among others.

The idea is that since it is flat it can have a lower center of gravity. Unfortunately, the exhaust has to come out on the bottom - or the intake does - and in an F1 car the only way to get that room is to raise the engine up in the chassis. A V configuration allows you to set the densest part of the engine - the crankshaft area - right on the floor and then have the pistons and heads raise up just a little to clear the exhaust manifold.

The Designer, Carlo Chiti was an extremely successful Alfa Romeo designer for many years. It was a Chiti-designed Alfa flat-12 that powered Brabham's infamous "Fan Car" in the '70s.

    Bump!

I was researching some of Subaru's more obscure engines, and stumbled across this.

This would be a great idea now that F1 are reverting to smaller turbo engines next year.
