And to think, I put mine back in because I thought I lost some throttle response....

Of course that could have been because of the huge wad of foam tape that got sucked into my airbox..

I may take it out again and hack it.

    Thanks for the pics Verdgo!!

Thanks for the other info Supermarkus and Pace!!

BTW: How much is a new silencer? Anyone know?

I think Shiv dynoed and found a slight power loss with the silencer hack.

I did it for sound and weight loss. I also like my engine bay to be as clutter-free and minimalist as possible.

I think my loss was mostly the foam tape stuck in the airbox. I did, however, love the sound. I may take it out again.

Yikes! Maybe I'll throw the spare on and see if it helps out. Without an ECU reset of course.

Question All show and no go?

Is this mod all show and no go or not? I am always interested in inexpensive mods that will give me worthwhile performance, but there seems to be no consensus on this one. Has anyone tried this one on the dyno? I wouldn't mind a little turbo noise if it was accompanied by some power gains.

I'm pretty sure you won't see any power gains, just sound gains

It's actually neither. Its all sound. I didnt notice any power gains or loss. I would just buy a short ram intake instead to save you the time.

I wonder if I should throw the intake back on since I put a BOV in and don't need to hear the turbo whistle? Hmm... Interesting!

I've hacked mine differently. I've gone lower down into the neck, using a 45 degree angle- the opening facing the air entering into the fender well. My thought was to have two sources of air- the oe path via the air scoop (not the hood scoop), two air entering the fender well. High flow panel filter in place (ITG) and oe looks retained.

The pic sucks, but you'll get the idea

    doesn't work

So, this mod is totally for sound -
    no performance boost
    little lighter

I think there is a performance gain, albeit not a large one. By removing the "silencer" portion you've removed a pretty good restriction in the intake tract.
