Smoke coming out of A/C vents

I was driving on an uphill battle against an E36 M3 today. It lasted about 3 minutes, and I was in 3rd gear, chasing him the entire time. I did pretty well, never really letting him get more than about 6 cars ahead of me (I always kept about 4 cars between us just in case).

I was driving in 3rd gear the whole time between 3,500-5,000rpms for the 3 minute hill climb/Initial D attack, and at the top I turned and he kept going. When I came to a stop, I was at a gate, and had to check in to this resort I went to go hiking at for the day.

Anyway, while sitting in my car waiting to go in, smoke started to come out of my driver side circular A/C vent (one closest to the driver's door) for about 30 seconds, then stopped. I continued up the drive to the place, then turned my car off without any more problems.

Smelled like coolant....but why would it be coming out of my vent? Last time I had my coolant problem, it was coming out of my hoodscoop.

whoa...does your A/C feel normal? As in still blowing out as strong as before? It sounds like something melted somewhere?

Everything was normal. After the hike, I drove back on the highway for just under 2 hours, varying the A/C on and off, and it was cold as it was before.

Also, the A/C was NOT on during the hillclimb, FWIW

    More likely condensation than smoke.

    Probably nothing to worry about.

Since it's such a new car, it's probably not a huge deal. For what it's worth, though, when the A/C went on my Camry it began by blowing what looked like smoke out of some of the vents. When it first happened, the A/C still worked fine. However, over the period of a few months, it slowly stopped working.

I don't want to cause any alarm, as I'm sure your car is fine - but that's what my experience has been with what looked like smoke coming out of the vents.

Stop by the dealer and have them check your heater core. When it goes, white smoke smelling of coolant will come spewing out of your vents. It'll be a warranty issue. I know you'll give em hell if they say your engine mods caused the heater core to fail.

It could also be an A/C compressor seal. If coolant leaks into the compressor, it could end up coming out of your vents.

^^^ what he said. I had that happen on two of my previous cars.. Looks like the vents turned into a fog machine.

With the a/c on, condensation does sometimes come out of the vents normally. If it smells like engine coolant however, the heater core is leaking.

Did you move your a/c drain pipe by any chance? I've heard that aftermarket up-pipes interfere w/ the pipe if its not moved...

    Holy old thread, Batman!

I think I made that AC compressor seal thing up. I have no idea what I was talking about.
