Red face Blow off valves...Performance & Sound

So I've been told many things about BOV's. They need to recirculate, and don't need to. It harms the engine if it doesn't it doesn't matter at all. Can someone gimme some more "finite" explanation(s)?

Also....I am looking for a certain sound in my valve. I've heard it before in movies, and real life. It kinda sounds like a rattle snake, with the delay/multiple release thing going on. Who makes that? Can anyone find sound clips? Thanks for your help!!

    BOV=bad unless its a 50/50 recirc.

From Cobbs forums, This is what happens to your car when you have a vent to atmosphere BOV.

Pretty much everyone else has answered this question but I'll just elaborate a bit more on this just to clear up some questions that may remain.

The reason the car will run rich then lean and back to rich again is because the air that has just been vented to atomsphere had been measured by the sensor (MAF) but the engine did not see that amount. Thus confusing the ECU and causes it to try and compensate for the missing amount.

Example: (please excuse the cheesiness) Just trying to get the point across.

MAF - Ok ECU this is how much air has just entered.
ECU - Ok, Thanks. Let me calculate how much fuel to add.
    [SHIFT]
    BOV - PSHHHH~~~~~~
ECU - WHOA! WTF! Hey MAF! where's the air you told me that was going to be there?
ECU - Dang too much fuel!(rich) better cut back on the fuel. (lean)
ECU - Everything else checks out ok (boost, ignition, all sensors, etc...)
ECU - The driver is still on it. Too much air. Better add some more fuel (return to rich condition).
MAF - Uhh......? ECU, I swear I measured it correctly. Hm..~~~
MAF - Well here's the next amount...(back to normal fuel map until next shift)

and the cycle continues. Just keep in mind that this convo happens in an instant. (like milliseconds)

But those with dyno tunes are seeing similar effects but not as drastic due to alteration/corrections made to the maps.

Hope that clears some things up.

    Regards,
    Woon

    my sentiments exactly...hahahahhaa
I once was lost but about six months ago, i'm found....or something.
I was confused too...but the best way to go is to just forget about the BOV...don't even waste your time. Just concentrate on mods that your car will appreciate

Well the R2D2 SSQV clone BOV is installed on project bugeye. Now this week we need to pickup the duck call and make a video. Interesting to report that having driven the car about 40 miles with the BOV installed, there seem to be no effects whatsoever on the 02. I wonder if since 02-03 ECU's are slightly different if they can handle a BOV the way they do a MBC. In any event its loud and annoying and I can't wait till it quacks like a duck.

Speaking of which, I pulled up to an SRT-4 today. Impressive. I would go into the story.. but it's off the topic. Really quick cars though.
