    problems with bov

Hey guys I have a 02 wrx with a turbo xs stage 4 (vf34) with tmic... I had on the car a rfl but at 20 psi the thing was so damn annoying and could barley hold the boost.. So I changed over to s hks ssq, but later found that it was hitting inside of the hood. So I went to swap out to the rfl again till I could cut and weld the flange, but when I put it back on, even with no washers in the thing, the opening of the valve was late, like the wastegate was opening then the valve would flutter...even at 20 psi it would not open.... so I thought that I had a leak in the hoses somewhere b/c I just installed samco hoses and some were a little loose. But when I started the car back up still had the same problem... teh car would flutter then the bov valve would flutter open...
Can you help me diagnostic the prob and how to fix it

You do know that the HKS unit can be turned so that it doesn't hit the hood right? There may be a small portion that still rubs against the fire retardent, but it's no big deal.

I spent 3bills on a bov and used it for a month. Daily driving on my TXS st.4 ran better w/stock BOV. Past DSM guys revealed that by lighty denting the bov it wil hold more boost. There are some good ones out now. Turbo smart I have seen and driven in and it worked great. Stock motor/psi though. BOV's require maintanence. I will get flamed, but I took off my $300 one and went back to stock valve. Ran great. Ran 18-18.5 psi daily driver and dyno'd w/ no fluctuation in boost until heatsoak became a factor.
    still stock

If you can happily afford one and you like it, get one, that's all there is to it. I dont know why people still say its such a "pointless" mod...or a waste of money. Putting a new momo shift knob on your car is just as "stupid" in that sense, it's also only for show, and I bet the people who said the bov was a pointless mod went ahead and bought a pointless shift knob, which in most cases costs almost $100 and is definately less of a performance mod than a bov.
I'm just saying that not everyone saves up their money to add more hp to their car, some could care less about being ABLE to go faster when they use their cars in the city for things other than racing (which is the case for most drivers).
MOST people like having "show" to their cars, which is why they keep them clean, put nice wheels on them, or in this case install a bov if thats what you like (I think they sound sweet and is something that not many other cars on the road are capable of having without a turbo )

Finally an answer to the original question, yes you can put a bov on a stock wrx with no problems at all, but don't get a 100% atmospheric (sp?) one...I went the safe & fully adjustable to your preference route and got the GFB Stealth FX, which I think sounds good, can be adjusted if its too loud or quiet, and doesnt harm the car's idle, etc. at all.

The two WRX's I've run into on the road with BOV's were still riding on stock wheels and appeared to be all stock except for the cute little noisemaker under the hood.

run into this wrx, all you'll see is taillights my friend. just because the wrx appears to be stock w/ a BOV doesn't mean it's stock.

reply to the post-- yes you can put a bov on a wrx. My friend has one that he put on w/ a cai and exhuast-- I took his car to 13.9@97 at 5700-5800ft.

thanks all for your support and for some criticizm. I am so new to this wrx culture, maybe Im not looking in the right direction as far as starting to mod the car.

I shoulda done a search on this subject before posting as there is so much on this topic already. Ill remember that for next time i have a question like this.

I will gather my info, and will get the mods i feel may be best to start with.

    thanks again !!

compared to the TXS the HKS sounds more like a whisle.
I've heard it refered to as the sound of an anemic eagle

    Sounds cool IMO..

Since you live in Jersey you're first mod should be a top of the line security system.

Yeah, just cause it looks stock and has a BOV doesn't mean thats the only thing it has. I have TurboXS RFL bov, and godspeed uppipe and a helix downpipe but the stock cat-back.

I tell stupid people (ricers) i'm stock with a bov. Most people can't tell i'm not stock, but you can definately tell a difference when i rev it compared to stock.

I surprised an evo last weekend when we were messing around and I could pretty much keep up and an equally stock looking wrx got owned by both of us.

I am thinking about keeping the stock cat-back and going stage 2 with it to surprise people

I had the RFL and it was total junk so I sold it and got a SSQV. it's not nearly as loud as the RFL but it's a clean, metallic, chirp instead of a loud pop like the RFL.

The HKS also doesn't shoot out flames like the RFL would do. It fluttered too much. Don't get one.
