This is the big BOV thread. If you didn't find this thread, you didn't search.
This thread is where all BOV question threads get merged into.
The quote below in this first post is from our BOV info sticky and contains links to some very explanatory BOV information. Please take the time to explore the links before you ask repeated questions.
A stock WRX/STi comes with a BPV (Bypass valve) which is a vacuum-actuated valve designed to release pressure in the intake system when the throttle is lifted or closed. This air pressure is re-circulated back into the non-pressurized end of the intake before the turbo.
An after market blowoff valve (VTA) does basically the same thing BUT unlike the stock unit it releases air to the atmosphere (giving you the loud sound). Some people see an after market BOV on a stock WRX as being in poor taste (probably due to the fact that it is basically a noise maker that really as no other benefit), while others simply find the sound very attractive.
Proponent opinions notwithstanding, there is a small mechanical downside to having an after market BOV (VTA) on a stock WRX. The problem comes when releasing air to the atmosphere that has already been metered by the mass airflow sensor. When the BOV releases (blows off), the ECU will be injecting the wrong amount of fuel into the cylinders. The engine temporarily runs too rich (meaning too much fuel is injected into the cylinders). This temporary rich condition isn’t typically THAT harmful, but it may cause bucking or hesitation on lift-throttle as well as some other concerns outlined in the links below.
I recently purchased a TurboXS BOV with the WRX adapter kit which came with a metal plug for the return line to the intake. The instruction say to just plug the line and put the clamp over it which works fine, but I was wondering if anyone had cut the return line to about 2 inches and then put the plug in it so there isn't all that additional hose? Will this affect anything or would it actually help in anyways?
I didn't and it worked fine...one thing that might help is to use a different clamp, the factory hose clamp is a real b*#$@!! to use...use one of those screwdriver "screw-in" clamps....ahhh...too early in the AM, can someone please explain it for me...
+1. Or if you ever want to run a 50/50, you'll need that. I wish the hose was actually a little longer, its a b*tch to get around the valve without taking off the IC.
From what I have read...the crinkle red might now be offered anymore. Try contacting Worx Tuning or boostkits. they should be able to answer your questions.
I spoke to Mike at Worxtuning, and he told me that the demand of the Wrinkle Red finished BOV has been so high, and that the process of putting the finish on is so long, that they are looking for another process so they can keep up with demand.
I believe he also said that their website would no longer be offering the Wrinkle Red finish, but that if you called them direct you could place the order. I checked their website and they ad for their recirc valve still mentions the wrinkle red finish and shows a picture of it. If you want one, I would get an order in now. www.worxtuning.com
Well, it finally came in. I installed it last night. It was pretty simple actually if not a little annoying to work with such little slack in the hose. Annyway, IMO its pretty loud. Maybe not as loud as an HKS but i can hear it with the radio on and all. I have it set to 50/50 and notice very little if any difference in spool up time.
i know there isnt any difference in a bov but i love the sound, which bov do you guys recommend for a 05 wrx, i had the car for about a month and a half and almost hitting the breaking point. but which bov do you guys recommend thanks. BTW i was thinking of buying a HKS SSQV bov. What other brands and types of bov do you guys recommend
cool thanks ill look into that first. i guess ill just buy thE BOV without installing because im getting a pretty good price for it. also jw, why are people so against bov? does it harm your car?
